AI Detection - Deep dive
SmartDetector provides paragraph-level feedback of documents that are uploaded. It provides in depth analysis around the composition of text, looking for key characteristics of both human generated and AI generated documents.
SmartDetector is powered by our proprietary machine learning (ML) algorithms, carefully developed to evaluate text and provide a probabilistic score indicating the likelihood of human authorship. This is presented in an intuitive, user-friendly interface that makes AI text detection accessible to everyone.
Text that is identified as being AI generated is highlighted in red, making it easy for a teacher identify documents that were not authors by teachers.  It is designed to deliver balanced judgements, even for text that has been collaboratively created by both AI and humans.

Unlike tools that risk over-flagging, SmartDetector is deliberately conservative, designed to under-detect rather than over-detect, because a false claim that work is AI generated can have serious personal consequences.
In addition, SmartDetector applies a holistic analysis: if a significant portion of a document (e.g., the majority of its paragraphs) is confidently identified as human-written, the entire document is classified as human-generated. This mirrors realistic usage patterns. AI is rarely used to write just one paragraph out of twelve.
